The major fault of this type of teaching spelling where a child goes after its own sweet will is that when the child goes from one grade to another and it is sure to avoid the complications of the way to correct spelling. It may have innovative ideas but it is sure to lag behind to improve the writing skill.
So it is better to teach a kid how to spell correctly from the 3rd or 4th grade when the kid is a bit matured. In spite of all efforts to teach correct spelling and to guide a kid along the way to correct spelling, it is noted that the kid when grows up remains a bad speller. Such a child is given proper care of. It is the role of a teacher to lead him / her gently along the way of learning correct spelling: encouraging it all the way.
