The Use of Movies to Learn English

One of the major advantages for learners to master the art of the English language is to watch movies as much as possible. This is extremely engaging as a learning procedure as it is fun, thrilling and exciting, and at the same time it teaches you the basic aspects of mastering a language and excel in your linguistic skills and abilities.

Why Watch Films?

Are you a movie buff? Yes? Then get the movie theater rolling! Watching a movie in their original version, instead of going for the dubbed variety, is always a rewarding experience as everything there is for real – from the voice of the actors, to their acting styles and the background music too. You are watching everything in the real ambience, just as had been perceived by the director.

Learn through Input

Picking up your linguistic skills through watching the English movies is a procedure where you are gaining knowledge about the language through inputs. First of all, there are all those appropriate sentences that are going within your head. Other than that, your mind can impersonate them for preparing sentences of your own. Hence, people often resort to watching the Hollywood movies for learning English (other than reading books). However, as far as the books are concerned, the learner is able to pick up the nuances of how the language is used by native speakers, whereas with movies, you get the feel of how the language is being spoken in the present day.

Other than picking up the words that are being used, movies help you know the commonplace usage of the language. For example: a book will write, “The price of the book was five dollars, and I decided buying it”. In a movie, the actor would say, “The book was like five bucks, so I was okay with it”.

  • Many movies use the dialog like commonly spoken English and they even allow you to pick up the slang, and informal phrases that are not to be found in the dictionary like ‘freaking’, etc. Other than building on your grammatical skills and vocabulary, flicks or films also build on your pronunciation, helping you to speak like the Brits and Americans.
  • Understanding the spoken language is also an important factor since movies are not meant for learners. They are for native speakers, and this is why the actors speak and talk fast – just as they do in real life.

How much should you learn?

Learning the language is directly related to understanding it. Watching a movie with slow speaking skills will make it difficult to be understood. If you cannot understand a word in a book, you look up the dictionary, which is something you can’t do while watching movies. In such a scenario, you can stop a certain scene when you are playing a film on a DVD. For better comprehensibility, you can play the sentence as many times as you want.

Another option is to turn on the subtitles that eliminate the problem of unclear dialog. And as you are aware of the spellings, you can even look the meanings on the dictionary.
