It is known to all that the English language has many words that may seem to you confusing enough. You may wonder to find that some words have the same sound and same spelling but the amusing thing is that they offer you different meaning that may stun you every now and then. Amid many words, the words that may bring before you the great dilemma are “Advise” and “Advice”. I may offer you some idea so that you can easily solve the spelling and meaning riddles.
You may note that the two words have the exact pronunciation yet there is a bit difference in the placement of a letter in the same position. The two words “Advice” and “Advise” are interrelated; still the mystery lies in the perfect usage of the two words. You have to watch keenly how you use the words in a sentence and how they make a sharp difference in the meaning of the sentences.
You would be glad to know that the two words are etymologically same. They are derived from a French phrase that is “ce mest a vis” that means “I seem” or “in my opinion”. The phrase is used to express one’s perception according to his opinion. If we watch the word “vis” minutely we may find that there is the meaning “to see” underlying it.
If you take a keen watch in the Portuguese vocabulary you find the word “aviso” that means “in my opinion”. In Latin we always note a prefix “ad” that is used to hint at a direction. The same style was followed in the English language of the 15th century in a rampant manner. In the old English, there was a word “advys” keeping stress on the pronunciation of long “y”. So the journey is as follows-from “avis” to “avys” or “advyse”. In the modern English, the form “advise” is widely used.
Prior to 18th century “advise” was used to denote both the verb and the noun. They were same in meaning. When the question of parts of speech arose the similar spelling was in vogue. The English scholars used the “c” to denote noun and “s” to denote verb. Since then on the words the noun is “advice” is always used as noun and “advise” as the verb. The example goes like this: You are advised to follow my advice.
Actually “advice” that is the noun form denotes an opinion that is offered. The example goes thus: My father offers me good advice. Again when the question of “advise” comes we note that it is used to “offer advice”. The example goes thus: My father advises me to get up early from bed. Here the word advise is absolutely a verb. Father offers advice to get up early from bed. Here “advice” is nothing but a noun.
If minute care is not given the words may confuse you and embarrass you frequently while you are on your writing spree. What you have to do is to guess the words quite well and use them after your requirement.
