How to Teach English through Songs

Who can not be swayed with the power of music? It has such a charm that everyone is sure to benumbed under its spell. We generally use music as a balm for our bruised heart, but music can be used in other ways too. Music can be a process of imparting lessons to the students at school, especially when the students are none but the kids. They feel allergic to lessons but if a different method is followed they can easily be moved.

We know quite well that English though is the world language can not be easily spoken or read by large section of students globally. Especially those who never speak English as their mother language feel the problem quite vehemently. Keeping this problem in view, the method of imparting lessons through English is taken care of in different schools where the kids even the grown ups loom large.

It is noted that music helps the students to grasp new vocabulary, pick up accent and cultural manifestations. Those who are the native speakers of English too find fun in learning their mother language through music. Everything is nice provided a good song that is absolutely lilting is chosen. The proper care must be given to choose the song that is appropriate for the grades. The method is to find out a song with new words and it must be taken care that the words are known to the students.

Now the role of the teacher is to select some colored papers where the words in matching colors are imprinted after the exact spelling pattern. Now the teacher instructs the students to read them aloud in the melodious manner. It is to be watched that the students pronounce the words quite correctly.

It may be so that the students are told to make a short line comprising of four or five students. There must be one group leader standing in front of the line. Now a song is sung by the teacher or with he help of some device. The students are told to listen to the song with rapt attention and take care of the words used in the song. One student is told to follow the song and touch the colored paper where the word is imprinted. In this manner, all the students in the lines must have been given a chance to listen to the song and find the word hanging before him/her.

The teacher can tell some rules and definitions in a melodious way. All these must be taught in the class prior to this test. If the students find their known materials in a melodious tune, they may easily be motivated and concentrate to the learning process quite effectively. The thing that must be noted in this regard is that the literary devices must be focused in the lyrics of the song that is sung in the class.

Now it is the duty of the teacher to ask the students what they have learnt so far from the song. If the answer is satisfactory, the teacher can assume that his/her labor is perfectly fructified.
